Two Poems on Iran’s Freedom Movement

Mehrdad Mehrju

humanity as it is
in its own skin
without flags without parties
before borders before names
not translated

stands
where a human stands

nothing more nothing less
a flower you tend
each morning

a stranger’s voice is heard
calling
in a mute language

a hand is touched
an animal is fed

kindness
nothing else

it is not a dream
for us
freedom
not a zone
not a slogan

a shared goal
a collective commitment
a held breath
a loving embrace
and the dark midnight
that happens together

freedom was a dream
before

when we open the eyes
a hug
reaching toward light
