How to Make an Informed Vote in the 2025 Student Guild Election

By Stefanie Brown

With the up-coming election campaign period, following the 2025 Presidential Debate from 30 September, students can expect to see their Student Representative candidates’ campaign on Kelvin Grove and Gardens Point campuses.

So, “what’s my role in a student election?”  You have the most important role of all – to vote!

Your vote this year also puts you in the running for some exciting prizes, including a return flight to Asia with EVA Air, as well as 4x $100 vouchers.

Unsure of what to do or how to vote? Here’s how to stay informed and to make sure your vote counts this election season.

Meet Your Candidates

Before casting your vote, take a moment to really get to know who’s running and what they stand for. Each candidate brings their own vision, priorities, and style of leadership. Understanding their roles and responsibilities will help you see how they could represent your interests and the wider student body.

Check out their campaign materials on campus and online, whether it’s flyers, debates, Q&As, policy outlines, or behind-the-scenes posts, get a clearer sense of what they’re passionate about most.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions, start conversations, or attend candidate forums. Hearing directly from them (and even chatting with their supporters) gives you a clearer picture of their character and how they might work with others. You could also talk with friends, classmates, or student groups to get different perspectives—sometimes others will pick up on strengths or gaps you might have missed.

What Matters To You?

Think about your own values and what matters the most to you – whether its academic advocacy, events or sustainability. Choose a candidate that best fits your values and your voice!

When looking at candidates, ask yourself; “Do their goals reflect mine? Will they make decisions that improve my student experience?” Remember, voting isn’t just about picking the most popular name, it’s about choosing someone who aligns with your vision for what campus life should look like.

Chat, Debate, Decide

Discuss the election and the candidates with your peers, classmates and fellow club goers. Share perspectives on issues affecting campus life and build a strong understanding of campus life across communities.

The more you listen, the more you’ll get a sense of the bigger picture: what students from different faculties, backgrounds, and experiences want from their Guild. You might find common ground with people outside your usual circles, or discover new priorities that broaden your perspective.

Vote – Your Union, Your Voice – Your Vote!

Encourage your peers to get involved and cast their vote! The more students make informed choices, the stronger and more effective your student representatives can be.

The 2025 Student Election is not just about choosing the title of your Student Representative Council – it’s about choosing the voices that will advocate for your needs, values and your future on campus.

Take time this election season to learn about the candidates, their roles and values and make an informed vote for who best represents you, the students.

Online voting opens 7-10th of October – all you need is your student email! Happy voting!
