We are all aware of the ever evolving and environmentally destructive use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Whether it’s used to help rewrite your work emails, check the readability of your document, or create a Studio Ghibli inspired version of a photo, the use of AI is abundant and all encompassing.
Working as an Academic Advocate at the QUT Guild, we have witnessed many students facing academic misconduct allegations relating to the suspected use of AI. These can arise from genuine concerns of AI use by markers, or detection due to the use of unusual language, mismatched references, and links to non-existent articles.
If students are caught using AI in assessments when it was expressly forbidden, they can be found guilty of academic misconduct. This can result in a penalty, such as a zero for the assessment, complete unit failure, or potential expulsion.
All QUT units specifically state whether or not AI is permitted in the individual Assessment Items—it’s important to check this before you use AI in an assessment.
If you’re struggling to complete your assessments in time, never resort to using AI to help you finalise your document, and yes this does include Grammarly. There are other ways to seek late night help that can provide you with feedback within 24 hours, such as Studiosity, which all students can access.
If you’re ever asked to speak to your Unit Coordinator about Authentication of Learning or Academic Integrity in general, we recommend booking an appointment with the QUT Guild Advocacy Team to go over the concerns in detail and help you prepare for any meetings. We are here to advocate for you and to get the best possible outcome for your circumstances.
