Meet Your: Women’s Officer 2023 – Sia Hills

Hi! I’m Sia, your Women’s Officer for 2023. I’m a mature age student entering my final year of a double degree in Human Services and Justice. I major in Policy and Governance, and have a strong commitment to social justice, women’s rights, and a desire to support our community. The journey to this point has been long, but I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. I was originally in a double degree with Creative Industries and Human Services, but I lost my passion for the Arts. This degree has really opened my eyes (and doors), and I am so excited to see where I end up next.

I have an addiction to coffee, House of the Dragon, and I’m often found with my nose buried in a book, or vibing out with music from David Bowie, Muse, or Guns’n’Roses. Self-care. It’s self-care. At least, that’s what I keep telling myself.

I stumbled into this position by accident (a very good accident) and on a total impulse. I lowkey have Zoe and Madison to thank for it. I have always wanted to be involved with the student community, but social anxiety and general anxiety kept me away. I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to make a difference or connect. But I bit the bullet, and here we are. I’m excited to engage, to learn, and to really connect with the students, and QUT community as a whole. I want to be able to provide a voice for students and provide a space for them to come to me and talk. I’m committed to furthering a sense of justice and inclusivity, and regardless of challenges that may present, I will strive to overcome that.

My main inspiration is to create an official support network for students who have experience on-campus harassment, and to provide a platform where they feel safe to talk about their experiences, and provide them the tools that will connect them to a safe place for reporting. Through my own experiences, I have learnt the value of unity and support. Where I had none, I want to be able to give that back. I look forward to engaging with everyone in the on-coming year.

Please don’t be afraid to say hi – come to me with anything! I’m always ready for a coffee and a catch up. Ideas are always welcome, too! Or if you just want a friend. I can be that person as well. You can email me at womens@qutguild.com
