Hey you!
I’m Paulina Luisce, your welfare officer for 2024. I am an international student from Mexico, currently pursuing a Master of Information Technology. Let me share a bit about myself- I love musical theatre and you might catch me ruining songs with my off pitch singing! I also enjoy Latin dance and surprisingly, ever since I moved to Australia, I’ve been dancing more than I ever did back home. When I’m not working, you’ll likely find me outdoors, hiking and listening to the best tunes Aussie birds have to offer. These activities aren’t just hobbies; they’re my recipe for keeping my mental health in check and my spirits high.
Now, let’s talk about why I decided to run for this position. Life has taught me that if you want something to change, you have to get involved. The Guild has been doing a great job providing support services for students, and my main goal this year is for these services to have a greater reach, especially the food bank. With the cost-of-living crisis hitting hard, the food bank has become a lifeline for many students, particularly international students. Nine out of ten visitors to the food bank are international students. This is not surprising, given that our budgets are already stretched with the higher fees we pay each semester.
To increase the food bank’s capacity, we’re negotiating for more funding and partnering up with local organisations to cut our costs. Additionally, I’m planning several activities to help you de-stress and connect with other students. I want all students at QUT to feel supported and empowered by their student union.
So, here’s to a year filled with joy, motivation, and a commitment to making student life better for everyone. I’m not just your welfare officer; I’m your friend, your supporter, and together we can make our campus community an even better place.
