Lily Stacey: Independent candidate for Queer Officer

Glass invited all Guild election candidates to submit a statement explaining why they are running and why they deserve your vote. This is your chance to hear directly from those who want to represent you—so take a moment to get to know their priorities and visions for the future.

Voting opens on Monday, 21st October 2024. You can check out the rest of the candidate statements here.

I returned to QUT in Semester 2, 2022 to continue studying the Engineering degree I started after graduating high school in 2011. That semester ended after I dropped out due to experience bullying in a group assignment. At the time I reached out to the Guild and the Queer Collective, but no action was taken. Only weeks after I restarted my degree, I was ready to leave university because of the actions of other students. It was this memory that stuck with me when I decided I would run independently for Queer officer.

I know what it is like to not be supported by people who are supposed to support you, and I do not want any other student to experience that. I am running to give a voice to queer students. All queer students. As a transgender woman I know what it is like to be othered, even in queer spaces, and I will fight for our voices to be heard.

I come into this offering an alternative inspired by years of queer activism; that we can and should empower the entire community, not just the palatable sections of it. I hesitate to criticise others but just two weeks ago the current Guild celebrated Pride with a drag show; proof that they are not listening to the voices of the entire community.
