Erin Milne: Left Action Free Palestine! candidate for Education Officer & NUS Delegate

Glass invited all Guild election candidates to submit a statement explaining why they are running and why they deserve your vote. This is your chance to hear directly from those who want to represent you—so take a moment to get to know their priorities and visions for the future.

Voting opens on Monday, 21st October 2024. You can check out the rest of the candidate statements here.

My name is Erin and I’m running for Education Officer and NUS Delegate with Left Action Free Palestine! I’m a member of Socialist Alternative and Students for Palestine QUT. I’m proud to say I’ve spent the past year using my position as a CIESJ Faculty Councillor to organise Palestine activism on and off campus all year.

Right now, students in Australia are under attack. We’re skipping meals to pay exorbitant rent, our HECS debt is going up, and QUT is cutting our degrees. Meanwhile, the Labor government, instead of lifting a finger to address the cost-of-living crisis, is instead funding a genocide. Our university isn’t innocent either — through the robotics centre, QUT does research for weapons companies like Rheinmetall and Boeing. The Vice-Chancellor, Margaret Sheil, is happy to accept money from companies profiting off the genocide in Palestine.

That’s why I’m proud to have helped organise the QUT Guild Special General Meeting for Palestine this semester. Over 600 students had the chance to have their say over how our student fees should be used. Overwhelmingly, students voted to cut ties with weapons companies and Israel. I think this is what student unions should do! Unions like the Guild have the resources to fight for students’ rights and to take a stand for what’s right. That’s what Left Action candidates do with our positions and it’s what I’ll continue to do if I am elected this year.

Left wing and pro Palestine students should vote 1 for Left Action Free Palestine to get activists elected to the Guild!
