Declan Kerr: NUS Delegate

Glass invited all candidates to submit a statement about why they’re running in the Guild elections and why you should vote for them. This statement is being published as received from the candidate.

Voting opens MONDAY 23rd OCTOBER 2023. You can read all candidate statements here.

Hi, I am Declan and I’m running with Left Action to be a delegate to the National Union of Students.

I’m running because QUT students need fighting activists in the national union of students. At the moment, students are being hit hard by the cost of living crisis, with rents and the price of groceries sky rocketing. Furthermore, we have seen our learning standards rolled back over the past while, with QUT making cuts to teaching staff, inflating class sizes and recycled content becoming the norm. Student unions should be standing up to this

Students have been on the front lines of fights around key social issues. This includes the climate crisis, which poses a critical threat to our future. We have also seen the far-right in society becoming more confident, which is evident in the touring of far right hate figures like Posie Parker, and the current racist “No” campaign against the voice to parliament. This year I have been involved with other members of Left Action in standing up around these issues, and Left Action activists were key to organising protests which shut down the speaking tour of notorious transphobe Posie Parker.

If elected I would like to see our student union throw itself into campaigns around these issues, as student unions have a role to play in fighting social injustice and for the rights of students.

Vote 1 Left Action
