The QUT Guild x Glass Magazine’s Battle of the Bands semi-finals kicked off with an electric showdown between Angry Furniture and Liquid Sun. These two bands had proven themselves in the heats, now both were stepping up their game. The Botanic Bar crowd knew they were in for a fight, and this one came right down to the wire.
The Bands
Angry Furniture opened the night, bringing their trademark energy to the stage. Known for their punchy sound and chaotic edge, the band has been a crowd favourite throughout the competition, and in the semi-finals, they came out swinging. Their set was loud, unapologetic, and impossible to ignore, with every track daring the audience to go harder. A surprise highlight was their cover of Amy Winehouse’s Valerie, which had the whole Botanic Bar singing along before they launched back into their original chaos.
Liquid Sun followed with the tight alternative rock sound that has made them one of Brisbane’s most exciting up-and-coming acts. Active in the local scene since 2020, they balanced nostalgic covers with polished originals that had the crowd screaming along. Their lead guitarist, sporting a Bluetooth jack, even jumped into the audience mid-song to whip up the energy. With powerhouse vocals, exhilarating guitar solos, and a rhythm section that doesn’t quit, Liquid Sun showed they were every bit deserving of a grand final spot.
The Judgement
The semi-final vote proved just how evenly matched these two bands were. The Botanic Bar staff and the guest judge, 2023 Battle of the Bands winner Dublin Rose, split their votes, putting all the pressure on the people’s choice. And the audience delivered.
With just a five-vote margin, it was Angry Furniture who pulled ahead, securing 50 votes to Liquid Sun’s 45. The closest result of the competition so far, and a clear sign of just how fierce this year’s line-up is.
What’s Next?
With their razor thin victory, Angry Furniture has claimed the first spot in the Grand Final. The battle is not over yet, with more semi-finals to go and the heat is rising.
Battle of the Bands continues every Tuesday at QUT’s Botanic Bar until Week 7. If the semi-finals are anything to go by, the Grand Final is set to be nothing short of legendary.
