The Bands
Avista Plush kicked things off with a pounding blend of grunge, rock, and alternative, spliced with flashes of punk and funk. What started as four university students looking to play live has quickly grown into a band with serious momentum. Their groovy yet hard-hitting sound had the crowd moving. With recording plans and releases on the horizon, Avista Plush is one to keep an eye on.
Mum’s Cardigan took the energy to another level. The six-piece fused pop, funk, indie, jazz, and rock into a set that was smooth, unpredictable, and impossible not to dance to. With strong vocals, groovy saxophone, rich harmonies, and a rhythm section that locked everything together, their sound filled the Botanic Bar and kept the audience hooked from start to finish.
The Judgement
As always, the competition came down to the three-part voting system: one vote from the audience, one from Botanic Bar staff, and one from our guest judge. This week, there was no contest. Every single vote swung the same way.
The people’s choice spoke loudest: Mum’s Cardigan claimed victory with a 3163–631 margin, the biggest audience split of the competition so far. With such a commanding win, they’ve firmly cemented themselves as one of the frontrunners heading into the next stage.
What’s Next?
With their Heat Four win, Mum’s Cardigan is heading into the semi-finals, where they’ll face off against Hazy. The showdown promises to be one of the most exciting match–ups yet, as the competition only gets harder from here.
Battle of the Bands continues every Tuesday at QUT’s Botanic Bar until Week 7. Whether you’re there to scream along to your favourites, discover your next Spotify obsession, or just claim bragging rights, the semi-finals are not to be missed.
