Women’s Room on QUT Gardens Point Campus Defaced

The entrance to QUT Guild Women’s Room in X-Block at QUT Gardens Point campus was defaced reportedly between the evening of September 9 and before 9am of September 10.

The defacing consisted of removing a sticker on the door and replacing a message on the whiteboard door sign. There was no vandalism reported inside the room.

The message written on the whiteboard read “All purpose room – everyone welcome”.

No one has taken credit for the act yet.

QUT Guild Queer Officer (formerly Women’s Officer) Lauren Cuthbert said it was really upsetting and distressing for the regular users of the Women’s Room to find it having been defaced.

For those not in the know, the Women’s Room is a designated safe space on campus for female-identifying QUT students to use as a hangout spot and study space.

There is a Women’s Room located on Level 2 of X-Block at Gardens Point and on Level 2 of C-Block at Kelvin Grove.

“At a campus with a historically male dominated cohort, spaces like this are really important, so it’s frustrating that someone would try to downplay their value,” said Cuthbert.

Cuthbert said the QUT Guild is doing everything they can to maintain the safety and security of the Women’s Room.

Glass has reached out to QUT for comment but they declined.
