Sebastian Page: Elevate candidate for Secretary & NUS Delegate

Glass invited all Guild election candidates to submit a statement explaining why they are running and why they deserve your vote. This is your chance to hear directly from those who want to represent you—so take a moment to get to know their priorities and visions for the future.

Voting opens on Monday, 21st October 2024. You can check out the rest of the candidate statements here.

If re-elected as your Secretary, I will continue my collaborative and approachable leadership that I’ve demonstrated since day one. I put my hand up to run again because I see first-hand what the Guild can do, and I know that with the right team, and with the right priorities, we will make the Guild an even better place! In my short time as your Secretary, I have learnt that to be successful, you need to build coalitions and compromise, and I will continue this approach.

The people you place in charge of the Guild, you are placing in charge of a $2.1 million operating budget annually. This year, the team and I were able to secure an additional $351,405 in SSAF funding, a figure that is going to go a long way for so many students. I know that Elevate will be financially responsible with your money. Our policies need to be sensible, pragmatic, and reasonable for the capabilities of the Guild. However, we can still be progressive and empathetic when it comes our policies for our people.

This year, we are promising:

  • Monthly community picnics,
  • Minor bill relief,
  • Bins to collect the 10c rebate on recyclables in the bars,
  • Subsidised gym memberships,
  • Expanding the foodbank,
  • Keeping the food vouchers for students on placement,
  • Parking reimbursement for regional students on exams, and
  • A textbook car boot style sale.

These policies will have caps and criteria, but we’ll continue to advocate increased SSAF funding, so we can expand our offerings further.

We focused on welfare initiatives because we know that will make the most difference to students here at QUT. We are promising this because they are achievable within the means of the Guild, but will also maximise our outreach to students, who are our mission every day.

A vote for Elevate is a vote for your community!
