QUT Guild Student Election Results 2024

The QUT Guild Student elections have drawn to a close with the provisional elections results announced on Friday, October 25 in the hallowed halls of the Botanic Bar.

The election authorities (the Returning Officer) announced the provisional results for majority of the elected positions. There are still some results to be announced as the Returning Officers verify voting data.

A two-day period for appeals has now begun, after which the provisional results will be certified if unchallenged.

student unionism: The great return

The announcement ceremony started with an address from outgoing President James Reid, speaking on past achievements of the QUT Guild and the student engagement hit it took from the COVID pandemic.

“The Guild saw fewer and fewer nominees. Parties dissolved and productivity dwindled. We all fell behind and forgot what was important as a student union,” Reid said.

Although it is not all doom and gloom.

1,639 students voted this year, almost 2.5 times the numbers of students who voted last year!

Returning Officer Peter Travers spoke on the importance of staying in office and completing a term before announcing the results.

“You’ve campaigned on policies; you’ve asked the students who have voted for you to trust you. They have trusted you. They’ve put their faith in you. They’ve given you their vote.

“Stay the course, serve your twelve months. Do the job that you’ve put your hand up to do and that they elected you to do. It will give continuity and some certainty to [QUT Guild], which is vitally important,” Travers said.

SO, who’s in?

Elevate will be the dominant faction in next year’s Student Representative Council, so far securing eight of fourteen executive positions.

Left Action Free Palestine! is the next dominant faction, with independents up next and Revive coming in with the least elected.

Emme Muggleton has been elected as the next Guild President and is excited to start next year with many of her Elevate ticket alongside her.

“We’ve got so many great initiatives, so many big things to come. Big congratulations to everyone, big thank you to everybody else as well who helped behind the scenes. I’m excited for 2025,” Muggleton said.
