Alicia Wilson: Revive candidate for First Nations Officer

Glass invited all Guild election candidates to submit a statement explaining why they are running and why they deserve your vote. This is your chance to hear directly from those who want to represent you—so take a moment to get to know their priorities and visions for the future.

Voting opens on Monday, 21st October 2024. You can check out the rest of the candidate statements here.

My name is Alicia, and I am a third year Education and Creative Writing student at QUT. I am a proud Yawuru woman, born and raised on Larrakia land and have spent my life learning about the culture of my elders from both communities.

As a candidate for First Nations Officer with Revive, I am deeply committed to the stories of Indigenous students and ensuring that community and culture are respected and celebrated. The Guild has a responsibility to support First Nations Students, but there is so much more that can be done. With Revive, I will work to ensure that First Nations Students have the resources, representation, and support that they deserve.

If elected, I will advocate for the individual needs of each student to ensure there are the right programs and support to ensure you feel connected throughout your whole university experience. These supports will prioritise culture, community, and tradition to help students connect to their learning and campus environments.

I will also work to establish greater collaboration between the Guild and First Nations communities, both within and outside the university, to ensure that you have a voice in the decisions that affect you.

Additionally, I will push for more celebration of First Nations culture on campus by using art and storytelling. Our campuses need to show the rich culture that is in the lands they are on, and I will ensure that Indigenous cultures are more holistically integrated into university life.

By voting for myself and Revive, you are supporting a team that will make culture and community a priority through representation and inclusion. Together we can create a stronger Guild and a more welcoming university for all First Nations Students.
